Live with kindness.
Muxia
In the second half of my journey, one day as I was walking, the word "Muxía" suddenly came to me.
It’s one of the two coastal towns many pilgrims walk to after reaching Santiago.
They are known as the "end of the world" — places of rebirth.
Looking at the calendar and counting the days before my return,
I felt maybe I was meant to go there first.
So, I decided to skip Santiago for now and headed straight to Muxía.
When I arrived at the albergue in the afternoon,
there was a half-open space next to it that caught my eye.
I could glimpse some paintings inside.
I hesitated — should I explore it first, or wash off the heat and sweat from the day?
I chose the latter, quickly showered, and returned to the space.
Luckily, the door was still open.
Curious, I stepped in and asked if I could take a look.
There I met Alex — a painter born in Muxía who has dedicated much of his life to this town.
After that, all our conversations were carried by Google.
He just asked me where I was from,
then shared and flipped through a large collection of his notebooks and personal writings with me.
I asked him, "Are you here every day?"
He said, "I'm only here in the mornings. Today I'm staying because some friends are coming later to drink and chat."
Then he added, "If you're free, you can join us too."
Around the time his friends were supposed to arrive, I went back there.
Some of his friends spoke English, so they chatted with me from time to time.
We drank red wine. Everyone brought some snacks to share.
One woman even brought pear jelly that her mother made at home.
Before we said goodbye, he told me that if I wasn't leaving the next morning, I could come back and share my work with him.
The next day, I showed up at the studio again.
He asked, “Do you want to paint?”
Music was playing from a cassette tape in the large studio space.
I didn’t know what to paint,
so I just let the brush move freely — splashing, dotting, smearing, shifting on the paper.
All I knew was that in that moment,
I felt happy — and a little bit absurd.
Around noon, he said, “Let’s eat together. I have some good chicken at home — we can cook something simple.”
In this small town, it’s easy to run into people you know.
On the way back to his place, we stopped at a café for some coffee and beer.
While drinking, we met a good friend of his.
They talked, and soon the friend pulled up a chair and joined us — two more beers appeared on the table.
Not long after we left,
“Ah! How are you?” — we ran into another close friend outside a bar.
We sat down again,
and the waiter brought over another beer.
A new round of conversation began.
It usually takes only 2–3 minutes to walk from the studio to his house, but we spent about 1.5–2 hours on the way.
When I first arrived in Muxía, I had lunch at a restaurant whose menu happened to feature his artwork —
and that restaurant is right below his home.
It felt like everything was secretly connected,
and the letter Muxia suddenly appeared in my mind.
I noticed he has two very different ways of creating.
After asking him a few questions, just before I left,
he said to me, “Be a good person.”
